Why choose solar?

There is no questioning the fact that the cost of energy has been rising in recent years, and is predicted to continue to do so in the years to come. Alongside this, the importance of maintaining a healthy environment has grown, with environmental efforts thrown to the forefront of many people’s everyday lives. Installing a solar energy system is a cost-effective, sustainable, and simple way to reduce your environmental footprint and your energy costs. Solar energy is non-polluting and renewable. The best bit …. The source of this energy is free! Join us in our mission to Power Different.

What does PV stand for?

The term PV refers to photovoltaics, which is one of the two types of solar energy technology. Producing electricity directly from the sun to your property, solar PV (also what we refer to as solar panels) are incredibly efficient in powering your home through a renewable energy source.

What are the benefits of a solar PV system?

Solar energy helps in reducing your carbon footprint and your electricity costs. This results in a more sustainable property and a more environmentally friendly way to power your property. Go for green energy to help the environment and save you money. In addition to this, through solar energy you can generate your own electricity without relying totally on the grid, giving you total control.

I have an electric car, can I charge it for free?

Yes, there are a range of EV chargers which can prioritise the use of self-generated electricity to charge your car.

How long will a solar PV system last?

The usual life expectancy of the solar PV system will last 25 to 30 years plus. The modules themselves have long warranties, typically 12 years with a 25-year performance warranty. Inverter warranties range from 5 to 12 years and are extendable at a cost. The inverter is the part of the system that may require some maintenance or replacement during the life of the system. We are happy to help with this, just take a look at our Solar Panel System and Repairs page.

How many panels will I need?

We always design your system to best suit your electricity requirement. Solar PV systems are modular and can be any size. We would take into consideration the available space you have and any budget you had in mind. We will carry out a free survey to determine this, alongside meeting with you to discuss your requirements.

Can I fit a solar panel system myself?

We would highly discourage any untrained person or non-specialist from fitting solar panels themselves. DC equipment can be dangerous even for those experienced in AC electrical work. In addition to this, for solar systems under 50kWp you will require a MCS certificate which can only be issued by an accredited installer like ourselves.

What’s the difference between solar PV and solar thermal?

Solar PV panels are used to generate electricity via a solar inverter. Solar thermal, also known as a solar hot water system – is used to provide domestic hot water by heating a coil in your water cylinder.

Has the feed in tariff scheme ended?

Yes the old scheme called feed in tariffs finished in 2019. It was originally set up to incentivise the adoption of solar energy in the UK. Since then the cost of equipment has declined massively. in addition to this, as the energy you will be provided with will be in essence free, systems will comfortably pay for themselves within a few years without the need of financial support.

Can solar panels be moved?

Yes. We are able to safely relocate solar modules for you and or remove them whilst building maintenance work is being carried out on your property.

How much does a solar panel system weigh?

Modules themselves range between 18kg – 20kg each. Depending on the mounting structure this would increase slightly. We check the weight loading of the system to make sure your rooftop is suitable for installation.

Do I need planning permission?

In most cases no, your system can be fitted under permitted development. Properties which are listed, in the grounds of a listed building, conservation areas or in AONB will require planning permission. We recommend that a consultation with your local planners is sensible if you are unsure.

Are there any financial incentives for solar?

The main incentive is that every kWh that you generate and use within your property is not having to be billed to you by your electricity provider.
There is a scheme in place called the smart export guarantee, which will enable you to sell excess electricity to an energy company, this is measured by your smart meter. Prices paid can vary between energy suppliers, we can give you advice on the simple process to claim these payments.

Should I fit solar panels for my business?

With rising energy costs and low PV system prices, installing a system on your commercial property could be one of the smartest decisions you make.
Powering your rooftop or other unused space will create additional revenue for your business or help cut energy costs and peak demand charges.
Fast payback times are supported based on your solar installation and available solar financing options.

We are not in the East of England but would like solar

Power Different can help. Our team of solar panel installers perform rooftop or ground mounted solar panel installations nationwide and we can look after any solar PV requirement, whether it be for residential, commercial, agricultural or utility scale usage.

Why do I need to upgrade or maintain my Solar PV system?

  • Solar panels can become soiled over time with leaves, bird droppings, etc. leading to reduced energy absorption and less generated electricity. Cleaning and fitting optimisation to your system will have benefits.
  • Over time, your panels may become more shaded than anticipated, with tall trees, neighbour extensions etc. We can re-position your panels to maximise your energy absorption.
  • Technology is always changing, we may be able to offer you a more advanced inverter than was originally installed, meaning you can really get the most out of your sustainable energy source.
  • You may wish to install more panels than you currently have. We can install new panels and integrate them with your existing system to increase your energy output.

Why should I get solar panels?

Using renewable energy from the sun, even on the dullest of days, solar panels will be constantly providing you with energy, which means that you can enjoy a sustainable and often cheaper source of powering your home.

Is my building suitable for solar?

We conduct a desktop or site survey to ascertain the suitability of your property. Your available rooftop does not have to be completely south facing and even partially shaded rooftops can have effectively designed solar systems installed. We always offer bespoke solar systems tailored to your needs.

How does a battery work with a solar PV system?

A battery when coupled with a PV system will store unused electricity ready for use at night or times of increased demand within your property.

Are there different types of battery systems?

Yes, most Retrofit battery storage systems will be AC Coupled, this means they will make use of their own inverter to take the excess energy and convert it into DC for storage. Once your property needs the energy it passes through the battery inverter converting it into usable AC power.
The other type of battery system which is commonly installed at the same time as solar is called DC Coupled. These systems use a Hybrid inverter which has the function of converting the solar DC energy from the solar modules and the battery DC energy into usable power.

What size battery do I need?

A battery system capacity needs to be carefully considered; we would take into account the amount of available energy from the solar PV system along with the energy consumption of your property. We will recommend the most suited to your requirements using the information gathered from our analysis of your energy consumption.

Is a bigger battery better?

Not necessarily, if your battery storage is too large you may not ever have the capacity to charge it fully, which results in waste.

How long will a battery last before it needs replacing?

Most batteries carry warranties of around 10 years. This is often broken into cycles where the battery is guaranteed to charge and discharge a large number of times. In most instances correctly installed battery systems will outlast their warranty period with some factored degradation.

Will a battery work in a power cut?

Some battery systems feature a backup facility where a circuit can be used as a backup in the event of power failure. Generally, this would not power your whole property unless designed to do so. It can be quite handy to have the facility to have power in the event of a loss of mains. This will need to be correctly installed to ensure the safety of the system.

My solar inverter screen is blank, what is wrong?

The first thing to check is if the MCB (fuse) to which the inverter is connected is still on (in the upright position). Sometimes tripping can occur. If after you have reset the MCB it trips again there could be a fault with your system. If this is the case give us a call and we will be happy to assist you.

Why is my solar system performance is lower than normal?

There could be several reasons for this. Check the inverter screen for error codes, if you find one contact us and we will work out the probable cause for you.
You may have a faulty solar PV string, which is causing the system to have a reduced output. Contact us and we will attend your site to carry out some string tests.

Why do I have a flashing light on my inverter?

A flashing light on the inverter may be a sign that your solar inverter has detected a fault. Check the inverter screen for error codes, if you find one contact us and we will work out the probable cause for you and attend to the system if necessary.

Why do I have error code 403 on my meter?

If your solar meter is made by ABB the error 403 code displayed means there is no energy being recorded through the meter. This code being displayed is normal during the night or at times when your system is not working. If you see this code during the daytime when your system should be operational check the MCB which is connected to the solar to make sure it has not tripped. If the error code remains, get in touch and we will arrange to visit your site to assist you.

Why do I have Riso low displaying on my inverter?

This is a common issue which can present itself especially during damp or rainy weather. It normally relates to insulation resistance of the solar array. Things that could cause this are damage to solar DC cabling or water ingress to the solar connectors. We recommend you instruct a solar professional to assess the fault in detail. We are happy to help with this, and our team can assist nationwide in solar system repairs, installation and upgrades.
